Natural After Sun Care (incl. Recipe for Homemade After Sun Lotion)

We are in the middle of Summer and I think it is time to discuss some natural after sun care 🙂

I know I am a little late with the topic but at least here in Germany it seems like summer is only starting right now. We had a super cold July and only towards the end of the month the weather became summer like. Now it is actually getting really warm and I spend almost every second day at the lake – so at least for me it is only now that I really need some after sun care.

As most of you may know, I am not into conventional cosmetics, no matter if make up, face care of after sun products. This is why I decided to share some of the products I like to use; plus a few tips for after sun care in general and a recipe for your diy after sun lotion.

You know, in the end it is best for your skin to just rub the juice of an openend aloe vera leaf on your skin, maybe mixed up with some coconut oil and lavender essential oil! Not only is the best for your skin but for the environment too, as you do not have to buy products in plastic containers or whatsoever. So in case you get access to aloe vera leaves, go and get some and use them for your skin care.

This year, I was’nt able to find fresh aloe vera so I used products containing aloe vera instead.

One product that I am using extensively these days is the Hydro Bodylotion from Sante. It is not labelled after sun care but when looking at the ingredients (cucumber, aloe, coconut oil, jojoba oil…) it contains actually more or less the same as other natural cosmetics after sun care products.

In general, both cucumber and aloe are hydrating, cooling, and calming your skin after a sun bath. So products containing these ingredients will be helpful for your stressed skin. Often, products that are not labelled after sun care are cheaper than those saying “after sun lotion” so just watch out for the right ingredients.

Or; just use pure cucumber juice or aloe vera juice/gel on your skin; it has a great cooling and calming effect too and you will get a great effect for even less money.

For my face I really enjoy using a the aloe and cucumber seed fluid from Farfalla. This one is not labelled after sun care either, however, it IS the perfect after sun care!

Farfalla has loads of different products based on aloe vera and they do also have a pure aloe vera gel in their product range. The product that they actually label “after sun gel” they added the essential oils tea tree and lavender to the base of aloe vera; for an extra dose of calming ingredients.

Lavender actually works great on burnt skin and in case you are using pure aloe vera gel at home, you can always try to add a drop of lavender essential oil to it (or make my homemade lotion with the below recipe).

Finally I also want to share a “real” after sun lotion. This one here is from Lavera and, of course, also contains aloe vera gel. The organic shea butter in the lotion intensively cares for the skin, leaving it feeling silky soft.

So as you can tell from these products there are few essential ingredients for making a good after sun product: aloe vera is only one them. You may also want a nourishing oil that helps you skin keep your tan. And to make the product even better, add some lavender essential oil for an extra calming effect.

So why not just make your own after sun lotion?

Here is what you will need:

4 tsp of aloe vera gel

4 tsp of coconut oil

2 tsp shea butter

(the shea butter will make the lotion thicker, if you are okay with a rather fluid lotion, you can just leave it out)

4 drops of lavender essential oil

Mix all ingredients together and enjoy your healthy, toxin-free after sun lotion!

What kind of after sun care products are you using? Or are you already into making your own or just using aloe vera gel? I would love to know!
