Here we go for number 4 of my “how to survive a German winter” series. The last post was more about how to keep warm from the outside, with the right materials and layers. This one again is how to get HOT from the inside.
I am sharing my alltime favorite super spicy hot chocolate recipe with you. This hot chocolate is not only super yummy and will keep you warm; it is also really really healthy! No refined sugar, now cow’s milk, only nature and a few superfoods. Sounds good? Tastes good 🙂
The superfoods included in this recipe are cacao, chili, and turmeric.
Cacao is said to be anti-inflammatory, detoxifying (loads of antioxidants), and it creates loads of energy and can be used as an alternative to coffee to combat fatigue. It also has plenty of magnesium which protects against osteoporosis, reduces type II diabetes, and lowers blood pressure. Make sure to avoid dairy when making anything with cacao, as it will prevent antioxidant absorption – and is super unhealthy anyway.
Chili does actually contain more vitamin C than citrus fruits, is full of both iron and calcium, and, thanks to the capsaicin and fiber content in chili, it has effects of lowering blood cholesterol levels. Actually chili may even reduce risks of cancer, such as by killing cancer cells as some studies found.
Turmeric contains curcumin and curcmin is an extremely potent antioxidant. Not only does curcumin fight free radicals in itself, it also stimulates the bodies natural free radical fighting enzymes for a doubled antioxidant effect. Studies of curcumin also show it to have an extremely strong anti-inflammatory effect – even stronger than the effect of anti-inflammation drugs! And there are even studies out there, which found that turmeric works BETTER than drugs against depression.

So here is what you will need for 1 liter of really hot hot choclate:
About 0,8 L of hot water
A good handful of cashew nuts (soak for a few hours)
– you can also use store bought plant milk instead
1 dried chili (if you do not like it very spicy, use less!)
0,5 cm fresh turmeric root
3 TbS cacao powder
3-6 raw cacao beans
Sweetener of choice; I use fresh dates (1 good handful) or dried date sugar (around 80g)
A dash of pepper
A dash of vanilla
When I drink this hot chocolate at night, I usually use only half of the cacao and replace it with carob instead – because cacao will stimulate your systeme and may keep you awake when you want to sleep.
Put all ingredients into a high speed blender and blend on high for a minute or two. Try a sip and add more sweetener if you wish 🙂
These days I have a hot chocolate like this one almost every day. I love to have one in the afternoon when cuddling up on the sofa with my little one, reading some books and drinking hot chocolate. She likes the spicy version too but when I make a really spicy one, she prefers her own one without added chili. I add more carob and less cacao when I make hot chocolate for the little one.
Sometimes I play around with the ingredients, adding some cinnamon, lucuma powder or some baobab. But in general I make it as described in this post. When you first know how to, it will take you five minutes to throw everything in the blender and blend it up.
Feel free to play around with the amounts of ingredients, make it less or more spicy, add more or less sweetener, more or less cacao beans etc.
