About Luxury

Its been quite a while since I posted something for the “about life” column. This post here has been written and rewritten in my head for a couple of weeks already. Maybe even a couple of months when I think about it. I somehow never managed to write it down because a. new thoguhts came up every once in a while and I felt like it was not “ready” yet, b. I was thinking about what kind of picture to add to this post and could not really come up with something right, and c. I really did not find the time in these past couple of weeks because I have been pretty busy getting the new blog layout ready.

But now to the real topic, the real question: What is LUXURY for you? I am curious so please let me know in the comments!

What is luxury for me?

Let me give you some examples of what luxury is for me.

  • Luxury is taking a shower in my bathtub while the sun is shining into the bathroom and I am all in the sunlight.
  • Luxury is playing on the playground with my little one on a normal weekday afternoon and not having to work.
  • Luxury is to sit on my balcony on a sunny weekday morning and write my work emails from there while enjoying a smoothie made from organic fruit.
  • Luxury is to be able to choose what I eat every day, to be able to prepare the food I LOVE with the ingredients I like best.
  • Luxury is to spend an hour in bed every morning, cuddling and playing with my little one and my husband.
  • Luxury is to have all the knowledge I have and to know that I can accumulate more knowledge on whatever topic if I wish to.
  • Luxury is to be with the man I chose to be with and to have a most wonderful relationship with him.
  • Luxury is to be free to travel to basically all countries of this world.
  • Luxury is go outside every day and to feel safe, to breath clean air, and to be able to walk alone without feeling uncomfortable.

These are just some examples to give you an impression about what luxury is for me. As you can see it is not about chanel bags, cars or a huge house somewhere in a fancy neighbourhood.

Luxury is freedom to choose – to choose time over money, to choose where to go on this planet, to choose what to work, to choose who to marry and to choose to be happy.

Well this at least is how I see things.

When I look through blogs, I see a lot of “luxury” items. I see expensive watches, bags, shoes, dresses, whatsoever. And I read a lot of comments saying things such as “wow, I envy you for this and that”. But seriously, is it worth envying someone because of “luxury” items when thinking about what luxury really is? When I read through the posts of many blogs, I read about insecurity, about difficult relationships, about despair, about discontent, and fear. Not on all the blogs of course. But there are some. Is this then a luxury life? Having all this expensive stuff and showing off with it while being unhappy? I do not think so. No no no. This is not luxury for me. And never will be.

Luxury is to be happy with the life you have, with the body you have, with being you the way you are. Being satisfied with what you have – that is luxury. I am terribly happy with my life, my body, with ME. And this is the most precious feeling that no money on earth could ever buy. I am beyond grateful.

Love this and completely agree! Luxury is all about being happy not how much you have!

Such a beautiful post, Larissa, and I honestly couldn’t agree more with your definition of luxury. I truly believe that all the things in life that are free are the most fulfilling, as cliché as that may sound. I love the one about you making a smoothie with organic ingredients, that to me is luxury, too, because it can be quite difficult to find and eat organically, as ironic as that may be because it’s what’s really best for us. I personally try and eat as organic and all natural as I can! At the end of my junior year of high school, we had a terrible fire that destroyed nearly everything in our condo. I had to finish off the school year with two pairs of jeans and a couple of shirts, this happened in May, so I had quite a few weeks to go. Plus, not to mention, it happened a few short weeks before I took my SATs. That taught me such a valuable lesson, that anything and everything materialistic can be lost in an instant and if we define ourselves based off of those things, then we are uncertain of ourselves. So, I try to hold everything lovely, except the intangible things 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing because we all need a deep reminder like this from time to time. Perhaps more often than we’d like to admit. I hope you’re having the best week so far, beautiful!

luxury is watching tv, and sleeping endlessly. Sometimes, I even take the battery off my door bell, and have that guilt free sleep.
love spending some me time on the internet. Shopping is a luxury. I love shopping alone. Never shop with friends and family. I can go on and on.
Its getting so hot in India. Hope you are enjoying the weather there. The little one must have started walking by now ?

Very, very smart post! I can’t agree with you more, I hate all of this crazyness about those luxury items, actually I feel sorry for those people who love all those material things, I feel like all of this irrational consumerizm is just so bad, like some people dont have their prioritys right. For me luxury is being surrounded with people who love you and you love them back, having a family and a healthy relationship, being healthy. That’s the most important luxury for me, then there are of course: having good food on the table and preparin it, seeing nature, reading good literature or watching a good movie, learning about art and history, just getting to know the world better:) And I also think that a luxury is a spirituality in any form, knowing that there is a greater power than you, believing in God or just feeling something more, like you are never alone. I cant really explain it:) Anyway, I’ve just seen your site and your blog (and I think I saw your husband right?:)), I didnt understand a thing, but everything looks great, especially your recipes, the potatoe salad- yummy:) Wishing you all the success, have a lovely weekend, hugs:)))

I soooo agree with you Natalia! Thank you for your words 🙂 I was inspired by the one about spirituality actually. I never thought of that and yet, I have to agree with you. I had a long and very nice discussion with my husband about that one, so thank you so much for inspiring both of us <3

I love everything you have said! I definitely think our modern society is way too caught up in spending money and buying things we don’t need. We all really need to sit back and reflect on what is really important to make us happy in life. For me luxury is taking long nature walks with my camera and capturing the moment through images. Or wandering around town and discovering new places. Or spending a quiet rainy evening at home with the cats and my husband.

This is a beautiful post, Larissa and I’m glad you took the time and wrote this post. Luxury for me is accepting who I am and having a beautiful family. Sure, having all the lovely expensive stuff is a nice touch but at the end of the day, they don’t matter much…they are only stuff. Family is what matters most and I treasure as much time as possible with mine.

I’m totally with you on the definition of luxury. It’s not about the materialistic things, it’s about those wonderful things in life that you want to explore.

Good thoughts. I agree all the things you listed are luxurious, and I would have a similar list. I might also include a long, special dinner out with my husband as we love to try new restaurants. While I am not a designer shopper, I also can see how buying a special item would be luxurious. It is true though that being happy with what you have and see those special moments in the day is important.

It’s obvious to say, but happiness for me is in little things, in the smell of coffee in the morning, sleeping in the hammock, reading a good book, in a scented bath ylang ylang, in walk barefoot …
    Great post, dear!
