A Vegan Weekend in Dresden

I spent this weekend in the city of Dresden and to be honest, I did not have any plans at all to make a blog post about it! However, Dresden surprised me tremendously and I had like the best time ever there; partly, because of the awesome food I found. I cannot help it, but have to make a post about the treasures I found.

We went to Dresden to pre-celebrate my husband’s 30th birthday which is on March 6. In the first place, we went to Dresden to visit a street art exhibition (which was really really cool!) and I found us a nice little hotel to stay. We did not have any plans except for the exhibition, so saturday afternoon I just googlet for a vgan coffee shop to hang out a little.

I found a place called Cafe V when I googlet so we went out to search for it. However, on our way there, we stumbled over this magical place….


I had a look inside and plans were changed within seconds. Who cares about this other coffee shop with great reviews we read about, when we can have raw and sugarfree cakes? I fell in love with SPROUT the moment we entered.

I don’t know about you, but here in Germany it is still somehow difficult to find really good raw and HEALTHY vegan restaurants and coffee shops (very easy to find unhealthy vegan places on the other hand…). Sure, in Berlin there are a few and probably in a few other cities too. But they are not like everywhere. In my city, Leipzig, we had a nice place with sugar free treats for a few months sometime last year, but well, it is gone and ever since I avoid going out for cake; cause I do not eat any refined sugars and no white flour anyway.

And then I found SPROUT 😀

Ha, this reads like a love story… but… how can you not fall in love with a cake like this?


We had THE BEST black beans cookies ever, a super delicous raspberry cheesecake, a carrot-cheesecake, coffee with almond milk, and almond milk foam for the little one (she was sooo excited and happy!). Everything was beyond delicous. And everything was free from refined sugar and white flour, and vegan of course.

I am thinking about going to back to Dresden just for this place…. just to spend an entire day there and try like the entire menu (cause there are also options for lunch and dinner!)


But okay, enough of this love story. High on raw cakes and coffee, we went back to our hotel to get some rest and to get ready for the three course menu we booked with out half board. We had vegan food in not vegan hotels a few times already and every single time we have been extremely dissapointed (boring, unhealthy… white pasta with tomatoe sauce, you get the idea). Our expectations were super low for the three course menu this time.

And we’ve been so amazed! I want to share the highlight first: they had a sugar free dessert for us! I was just about telling the service that we are going to skip dessert as we are not eating any refined sugar, when the sweet lady handed me our menu for the night; and I read about the spelt-banana shake that was planned for us.


Appetizer was a pearl barley rissoto (I hardly got to try because my little one finished it within seconds)…

…followed by a piece of spelt bread with homemade spread, a quince-pumpkin soup, and some salad.


The main dish was sesame tofu on a minestrone of everything delicous, such as pumpkin, sweet poatoes, spelt, almonds, apples…

And the dessert was a shake make from bananas and spelt. No sugar. Nothing bad. Just pure happiness for me and my family.


Of course we’ve been super excited for breakfast after our dinner experience and we did not get dissapointed!

We had different bread spreads, a wide variety of fresh fruits, whole grain spelt rolls, something similar to oatmeal (made not from oats but from chopped whole spelt), red beet and apple salad, veggies, spelt milk… it was just perfect and we had like the longest breakfast in forever (our little one enjoys eating as much as we do and she does not mind spending one hour at the table, non stop snacking and munching).


It truely was a perfect weekend and if ever you get the chance to visit Dresden, make sure to give SPROUT a try (the owner is the sweetest lady ever by the way!) and spend (at least) one night in Hotel Privat.

And just to make sure; I did not get paid and I did not get anything for free for this post. Not even a cookie (the lady in SPROUT actually wanted to give me a free cookie 😀 but how can I not want to support this place with my money? No way.). I just had the most wonderful weekend ever thanks to these awesome places and that is actually worth much more than getting paid for a post or getting a free night in a hotel. At least this is what I think 🙂

    Als mich eine vegan lebende Freundin hier bei mir, in meiner Kleinstadt an den Bergen, besucht hat, war sie erst mal sehr darüber erstaunt, dass die Leute hier nicht mal wussten, was Sojamilch ist geschweige denn man die im Café bekam. War irgendwie fast schon wieder lustig, wie die Angestellten sie angeschaut haben…
    Wir hatten sogar eine zeitlang ein veganes Restaurant hier, dass hat sich nur leider nicht lange gehalten. Dabei war das Essen gut, stimmte nur leider beim drumherum nicht viel…

    Der Rote-Beete-Kuchen sieht super interessant aus, da könnte ich nicht widerstehen 🙂 Voll süß, wie dich Sprout begeistert hat und ich finde es toll, dass es Platz auf deinem Blog gefunden hat, auch ohne Geld oder Gratiskuchen 🙂 Allerliebst! Ivi

    Happy belated birthday to your husband! It sounds like you two had a fabulous weekend. Those cookies sound absolutely delicious. I’ve experimented with using beans in cookies and have had the best luck. They’re always surprisingly delicious!
