Fall is coming around and I easily get a scratchy throat at this time of the year. Luckily I found the perfect solution for this issue; something that is not only helping out when the throat feels scratchy but that is also absolutely delicious and healthy for your teeth: it’s my homemade birch sugar sweets!
To be honest I do enjoy them every now and then even when my throat is all fine and not scratchy at all! What I do is that I blend in different essential oils to get different effects; some I use simply for the good taste and others I use to help out when having a cold or even for calming down. This recipe is one to play around with to find your perfect candy for every occasion 😀
To start off with, I want to point out that I do not recommend eating huge amounts of birch sugar just because it is heathy for the teeth, has a low glycemic index, and is low in calories. All of that doesn’t mean that it is good for you to eat a ton of it. It still is an extracted sugar and it does not have any nutritional value for your body. In general I still prefer baking and sweetening with pure and whole dates, but for this specific case, birch sugar is perfect!
The idea for making xylit (how birch sugar most often is called) sweets came to my mind when my little girl asked me for sweets the other day. It was the first time she asked me this and it was because she saw a girl with a bag of candy at the playground earlier. So I was thinking about how to make something that I can give her which looks similar to the other sweets out there, which is sweet and delicious, but not as bad as conventional sweets are. Then the idea of birch sugar candy popped up in my mind, I tried it – and it turned out so easy and good that we made another and yet another batch.
I was sharing these sweets in my insta story the other day and got a ton of messages asking for the recipe. So here it is now 🙂
Now here is what you need:
200g organic birch sugar (xylit)
10-20 drops essential oils (I use Taoasis aroma oil) such as:
A silicone mould of your choice
Depending on your choice of essential oil, you will have not only a different taste but actually a different effect: rosmary is awesome for when you feel a little sick, lavender is great for the evening when you want to calm down, tangerine will make you feel reminded of summer and help you maintain your good mood etc. etc.
Instead of a silicone mould you can also use a backing paper and just drop the liquid xylit on the paper. You will then end up with a rather thin candy which can be nice too! Try not to use a too big mould as the sweets will turn out too big to enjoy. The larger diamonds here on the pictures do look pretty on the picture, but they are difficult to eat and I wouldn’t do them again.
Now how to make the candy:
Heat your birch sugar in a pot, stir carefully and wait until completely melted. Turn off the heat and add the essential oil of choice. Now pour into your moulds or on a baking paper.
And then wait… it sometimes takes up to 24h for the birch sugar blend to harden!
I once tried to make a blend with lemon juice and rosmary essential oil which turned out delicious and super good for colds, however, it took three days to harden! So be patient 😀
If you are intersted in the different effects of different essential oils, feel free to do a little research on that. It’s amazing what essential oils can do to your body and mind! You can just google (use ecosia!!!) something like “essential oil against migraine” and then add the oils you researched into your candy – like that you will have your very special and individual sweets for every occasion. Sounds fun doesn’t it :)?
